Bee Facts

Fly, Bee, Fly

It takes 556 worker bees flying 35, 584 miles (1 1/3 the distance around the world) to produce one pound of honey!

Hardest Worker in the World

The average life of a worker bee is about 6 weeks, after which the bee, its wings literally worn to shreds from flying, simply dies from exhaustion.

The Sting

So you've been stung, now what? Don't pull the stinger out. Instead, scrape the surface of your skin with a fingernail or credit card to break off the part of the stinger that is elevated, over time the remaining stinger will work its way out, similar to a small splinter. Trying to pull the stinger out will only squeeze more venom into the wound. See also "Honey Facts" below for another option.

Bee Myths

Allergies

Myth: I am allergic to bee stings, therefore I am allergic to beeswax. While many people have allergic reactions to bee stings, it is the injected venom that causes the allergic reaction. Products that contain beeswax, such as our Lip Balms and Whipped Body Butters, will not cause a reaction. Beeswax does not contain bee venom, therefore the opportunity for an allergic reaction does not exist.

Swarm, Swarm, Swarm

Myth: Swarming bees are aggressive. Swarming bees, for the most part, are a docile grouping of bees. When a swarm is flying, they are moving to a new location in which to build a new hive, as their old digs were overcrowded. Part of the ritual of swarming requires the bees to gorge themselves on assets (honey, pollen, and royal jelly) before leaving their old hive. They need these assets to successfully nest in the new location. Therefore, the gorged bees are not too concerned with you, they are concerned about finding their Queen a new home. This gorging has the same affect on bees as a big dinner would on you.

While it is not advisable to approach a swarm, as they will protect their Queen when it becomes necessary, there is no need to flee in terror.

Honey Facts

Keeping Healthy and Regular

Honey is a natural and fast acting laxative.

Live Long and Strong

Honey produces virtually instant energy without putting any strain on the digestive system. Football, basketball, hockey, etc. players use honey before and during competition for quick energy. Even Greek athletes ate honey before entering the arena!

Some of the nutrients found in honey are: calcium, iron, phosphorous, sodium, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, and ascorbic acid.

No Expiration

In ancient Egypt, honey was offered to the gods, buried in tombs with the dead as food for the hereafter, and given to newborn babies to ward off evil spirits. Unearthed some 33 centuries later, burial tombs have contained jars of STILL edible honey!

Sweet Stings

For some of us, being stung will actually help us build an immunity to the sting of a bee. For those who are not so lucky, if you are stung by a bee and have access to honey, dab a bit of honey onto the sting. The honey will help alleviate the severity of the reaction!

The Swan

Honey has long been recognized as a true cosmetic. It is an ingredient of many fine creams and lotions, including 805 Honey Company lip balms, Honey Scrub/Exfoliant, and our Sweet Bay-Bee Whipped Body Butter. By itself, it is very nourishing and refining for the skin. Every part of the body can benefit from the application of honey.

Viva La Fiesta

The Aztec emperor of Mexico, Montezuma, was paid a tribute of 700 years of honey by conquered tribes.

Mexican natives used honey as a basic food and for the preparation of intoxicating beverages.
